How to file your GSTR-1 as a Meesho seller, step by step

Ye guide Hinglish mein bhi hai: Meesho GST return kaise bhare

Every Meesho seller with a GSTIN files GSTR-1. The two things that trip people up are which files to download and how returns come off the sales. This guide covers both, with figures from a real seller’s month.

Download the right files first

In the Supplier Panel go to Payments, then GST Reports, and pick the month. You need all three files.

  • tcs_sales.xlsx, every sale in the month
  • tcs_sales_return.xlsx, everything that came back
  • Tax Invoice details, the invoice numbers, needed for Table 13

The biggest mistake: using only the sales file

Many sellers download tcs_sales.xlsx and skip the returns file. Then everything that came back is counted as a sale, and you pay tax on money you never earned.

Return rates on Meesho run at 30 to 40 percent. One seller’s August had ₹4,09,970 of sales and ₹1,48,872 of returns, 36 percent. Without the returns file they would have paid tax on that ₹1.48 lakh for nothing.

The sales file has negative rows too

Most people do not know this. Some rows in tcs_sales.xlsx are negative, with quantity zero and no manifest date. These are price adjustments and claims.

The same seller’s file had 74 of them, totalling −₹2,548.91. Every row has to be added, negative or not, or the turnover comes out too high.

State names are spelled differently in the two files

The sales file uses capitals, the returns file title case, and some spellings differ altogether. Unless they are matched to the same GST state code, returns never come off the right state.

  • CHATTISGARH in sales, Chhattisgarh in returns
  • JAMMU AND KASHMIR against Jammu & Kashmir
  • PONDICHERRY against Puducherry

Some states will go negative, and that is fine

Say Kerala had ₹8,000 of sales this month and ₹12,000 came back. Kerala nets to −₹4,000, because some of those returns were for earlier months’ sales.

Table 7 is a net summary, so the negative stays in the return. The GSTN offline tool accepts it, and so do the commercial tools CAs use. It lowers that month’s tax, which is correct.

The seller above had 14 such states in August, −₹3,061.83 in total. All of them stayed in the return.

Do not add shipping again

There is a taxable_shipping column. It is already inside total_taxable_sale_value. Adding it again inflates turnover by up to 25 percent.

To check: taxable value plus tax equals invoice value on every row. If it does, shipping is already inside.

TCS is 0.5 percent, not 1 percent

The TCS rate was halved in July 2024, from 1 to 0.5 percent. Some sites still say 1 percent. Flipkart’s and Amazon’s own reports say 0.5.

Questions sellers ask

Is the Tax Invoice file required?

Table 13 (documents issued) comes from it, and the portal needs Table 13 before you can file. Without it the JSON still uploads, but you must fill Table 13 on the portal yourself.

I sell on two marketplaces. Do I file two returns?

No. One GSTIN, one return. Meesho and Flipkart are combined into a single return, and the same state and rate from both are added into one row.

Returns were more than sales. Does it carry over to next month?

No carry-over is needed. The negative stays in this month’s return and the portal accepts it; it reduces this month’s tax.

Now try it yourself

The tool is free. Upload your reports, Didi checks them, and you get a file ready for the GST portal.
